Since it was established in 1921, The Winnipeg Foundation has been built by the philanthropic spirit of our community. Canada’s first community foundation, The Winnipeg Foundation is now a collection of 1,600 endowment funds established by people from all walks of life. Generations of donors have shared the Foundation’s vision of “a Winnipeg where community life flourishes.” All donations made to the Foundation – no matter their size – are important. Because they are all pooled and invested, gifts to the Foundation are permanently endowed and their impact will be felt in the community now and forever. Only the interest earned on these investments is used for grantmaking. Over the Foundation’s history, these funds have generated $140 million in grants to local charitable organizations. Grants are made across a broad spectrum of areas to help strengthen our city, including community service, education and employment, health, environment, heritage, the arts and recreation. As our thoughts turn to the holiday season, community spirit and the act of giving, The Winnipeg Foundation encourages all Manitobans to consider making a gift – either of time or monetary support – to a charitable organization close to their hearts.
