| When it comes to developing literacy skills – whether within an individual or an entire community – working in partnership with others is key.
A group of early childhood educators in Manitoba’s Pembina Valley has worked with local Hutterite communities to develop and launch a children’s book that provides a culturally relevant resource for their community. Written and illustrated by three teens from the Skyview Colony, Come Walk With Me chronicles life in a Hutterite community, using simple rhyme and repetition to help young children establish reading skills. This is just one of the dozens of grants made through the Literacy for Life Fund. The Fund is a partnership between The Winnipeg Foundation, Literacy Partners of Manitoba and Winnipeg Public Library. It has also received generous support from the Province of Manitoba and the National Literacy Secretariat (Human Resources and Skills Development Canada). On Monday, June 13th, the 15th annual Peter Gzowski Invitational (PGI) golf tournament raised funds to support literacy programming in our province. Manitoba’s PGI, part of a network of tournaments across the country established by the late broadcaster, is a project of Literacy Partners of Manitoba. The Winnipeg Foundation was pleased to be a part of this important initiative to support literacy in our community. |
